Properly Storing School Laptop Cases and Backpacks to Prevent Mold Growth

With the school year over and devices and collected, it’s crucial to ensure that these items are stored properly to prevent mold growth. Mold (and mice) can cause damage to your belongings and pose health risks. If you haven't yet taken these steps, we encourage schools to do so as we are still in the heat of summer—literally. Here are some tips to keep your laptop cases and backpacks mold-free during the off-season.

Clean Thoroughly Before Storage

Cleaning Backpacks or Cloth Cases:

  • Empty Completely: Remove all items from your cases or backpacks, including any hidden compartments.
  • Vacuum: Use a handheld vacuum to clean out crumbs and debris from all pockets and crevices.
  • Wash: If the backpack is machine washable, follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning. If not, spot clean with a mild detergent and warm water.
  • Dry Thoroughly: Allow your case or backpack to air dry completely, ensuring no moisture is left. If you wash them, ensure they are completely dry before storing.

Cleaning Molded Laptop Cases:

  • Wipe Down: Use a damp cloth with water or a mild detergent to wipe the exterior and interior of the case.
  • Dry: Ensure the case is completely dry before storing. Use a dry cloth to remove any remaining moisture.

Choose the Right Storage Location

Avoid Damp Areas:

  • Store your laptop cases and backpacks in a dry, cool place. Avoid basements, attics, or garages, as these areas can be prone to humidity and temperature fluctuations. Don't put them in a hot, humid place, as this can promote mold growth.

Indoor Storage:

  • Select an indoor closet or shelf in a well-ventilated room. This helps maintain a stable environment and prevents drastic temperature and humidity changes.

Elevate Off the Floor:

  • Use shelves or hooks to keep your items off the floor. This minimizes the risk of exposure to dampness, especially in areas prone to flooding or high humidity.

Preventing Pest Infestations

Avoid Rats and Mice:

  • Secure Storage: Store your items in sealed containers or bags to prevent pests from getting inside.
  • Check for Openings: Ensure there are no small openings in your storage area where rats or mice can enter.

Prevent Critters:

  • With high heat, critters are more likely to come inside looking for cool and comfortable places to nest. They would love to make their home inside your laptop bag. To prevent this:
    • Inspect Regularly: Check your storage area periodically for signs of critters.
    • Use Repellents: Consider using natural repellents like peppermint oil or commercial products to deter pests. (It is not recommended to put oils right on your case or backpack, instead put repellents or oils on a cotton ball or pad and store in a container with air holes and store near by.)
    • Keep Area Clean: Ensure the storage area is clean and free of food scraps or other attractants.

Use Protective Covers and Bags

Protective Covers:

  • Use protective covers or bags for your laptop cases and backpacks. This adds an extra layer of protection against dust, pests, and moisture.

Silica Gel Packs:

  • Silica gel packs can be a great way to keep cases and backpacks free of moisture. Please packs inside your bags and cases to absorb any residual moisture and keep the environment dry. These packs are effective in preventing mold growth and can be easily replaced as needed.

Sealed Containers:

  • Store items in airtight plastic bins to further protect them from moisture and pests. Ensure the bins are dry before placing your belongings inside.

Store in a Ventilated Area

Ventilation:

  • Ensure the surrounding area is well-ventilated to prevent humidity buildup. Good airflow helps keep the environment dry and reduces the risk of mold growth. Avoid tightly packed areas where air circulation is limited.

Air Circulators:

  • Use fans or dehumidifiers in the storage area to maintain optimal air quality. This is especially useful in regions with high humidity levels.
